Welcome to Smooth River Guide Co. We are a guiding business based out of Southern Ontario, Canada. Specializing in the education required to increase your success on the water, and become a better angler. Fly fishing, float fishing, spin fishing, we do it all!
Owner and guide Matt Martin, is an avid multi species fishing guide and is just as happy introducing his clients to our resident trout, as he is wading our clear water flats fishing for giant carp, pike and hefty smallmouth!

Whether you're interested in learning all about silently stalking our wild trout with a dry fly or nymphing, casting big streamers for bass, pike and muskie, learning how to rig and set up your centre pin rod and reel , or what lure is best for the situation at hand, Matt will guide you to become the best angler you can be.

This is the perfect place to start for anyone who is looking to learn how to start fly fishing.. In this 4 hours lesson, you will learn to read the water, how to choose the right fly, tie knots and cast! We will spend the day focusing on education that will help you along your fly fishing journey.
All the gear can be provided, so no need to invest in all the gear right away.

Are you interested in dry fly fishing for Brook Trout? Or euro nymphing for Brown Trout? Don't forget about chucking big streamers! If so, a full day with our guides will greatly increase your chance at a successful day. As always, our guides focus on the education components, we want you to be just as successful after your guide day, as you were with our guides.

STEELHEAD AND SALMON

Steelhead and Salmon might just be some of our hardest fighting fish in Ontario. Aggressive eats followed by line screaming runs. These fish are a true pleasure to target while fly fishing or float fishing. Drift boat trips and walk and wade options are available on the Nottawasaga River, Bighead River, Credit River and Eastern Tributaries of lake Ontario.

As the water warms up, so does the fishing! Come experience a day on some of our great lakes "flats" chasing smallmouth bass, freshwater drum, carp, longnose gar and northern pike.
If the wind kicks up, or the clouds come in, we also have some fantastic river smallmouth bass close by. Cant think of a better way to fish then to toss surface flies for big smallmouth!
Drift boat trips available on our larger rivers, cost of a float is $600 for up to two anglers.
POWER BOAT- BASS TRIPS

Come aboard our 18' Lund fishing boat on the many lakes found within Simcoe/ Muskoka for huge small and largemouth bass! Sight fishing the shallow water flats is something everyone should experience. Seeing a large fish, then making the perfect presentation is what summer dreams are made of. Specializing in fly fishing tactics, we also cater to anglers that fish with a spinning and baitcasting set up and are looking to approach our fisheries from a different perspective. Booking late June through October of each year. We guide fishing trips on Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching, Georgian Bay and many lakes found in Muskoka!
POWER BOAT- PIKE OR MUSKY FISHING
Starting at $750 for local trips, trailering costs depending on distance travelled.
Warm spring days, cold water, big flies and huge fish. That's what pike fishing is all about! Shortly after pike we start chasing Musky in the lakes and rivers. Come chase these large fish in one of the many lakes found within the Simcoe/ Muskoka or Grey Bruce areas. Dont have a specialized 10 or 11 weight fly rod set up? Don't worry, we have all the gear needed to get you casting these large flies for big, sunbathing predators! Booking Pike from May until November, and Musky from June until November, with the cooler months being best!
Guiding fly fishing trips on Georgian Bay, lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching, Muskokas and many lakes in the Kawartha region. We also guide conventional tactics for all warm water species.
SMOOTH RIVER ACADEMY 2024
$200-400
Season two of the Smooth River Academy is in the works! This year we will be hosting it on June 8th on Elora, Ontario. This events is aimed at anglers from absolute fly fishing beginners, to fly anglers with an intermediate skill level. A morning 4 hour introduction program will cover everything from what is fly fishing, basic entomology, fly casting instruction and on the water instruction. A perfect way to become acquainted with this amazing activity.The afternoon 4 hour lesson, will take a somewhat deeper dive into fly fishing for trout. Where we will cover intermediate styles of fly fishing. Diving into technical nymphing, streamers and dry fly techniques. This would be a perfect session for those who attended the morning class, or for those who have already been at it for a little while. Each session is available for $200 plus HST. Book both sessions for a 15% discount! More information to come over the following months.
